THE BUSINESS OF BEING BORN (DVD) - Ricki Lake (producer)
A great DVD and a great place to start. I feel it is a good view of the sanity of homebirth. It also gives folks some idea of why in the world you would choose to have a homebirth. This is a good one to show your family members who are not yet convinced you should have a homebirth. Available through NETFLIX or All Natural Lending Library
INA MAY'S GUIDE TO CHILDBIRTH - Ina May Gaskin
Many of you are familiar with Ina May Gaskin, a pioneer midwife from The Farm. This recent book is up to date and extremely readable for everyone whether you are pregnant woman, support partner, midwife, doula or doctor involved with birth. Part 1 has some of the same great stories of Spiritual Midwifery along with a well organized Part 2 focusing on the hows and whys of what we do at a homebirth. This has become my favorite recommendation!
The Birth Book - William Sears and Martha Sears
The Birth Book's subtitle is "Everything you need to know to have a safe and satisfying birth. This book goes through the history of birth, all the options as well as the preparation for the birth. I prefer this book to others because of their discussion of home birth. It is nice to have a doctor and nurse promote home birth.
THE THINKING WOMAN'S GUIDE TO A BETTER BIRTH - Henci Goer
I include this on the list mostly for women who are or want to be midwives. If you are interested in what we mean when we say "evidence-based midwifery care", this is a good book to read. If you are needing a bit more research based information on why you are feeling uncomfortable with mainstream practices, this is the book to read. This book reviews maternity care in the United States including mainstream belief and practices, any procedures and what the trade offs are for any intervention. The second half of the book is appendices of Literature Summaries continuing the discussion about the procedures and interventions. Don't let it intimidate you, scan the headings and read what you are interested in.
BIRTHING FROM WITHIN - Pam england
Ahhh. Not just another Childbirth Preparation Manual. The subtitle, An Extra-Ordinary Guide to Childbirth Preparation, gives you only a glimpse of the journey this book will take you. This is the perfect book if you really want to explore your creativity and inner being as a pregnant woman. I love searching through the pages looking for the activities for my own childbirth preparation class to make it more fun, more meaningful and more useful. The activities are insightful, exploratory and will help everyone prepare for adventure of birth and beyond! WARNING: For some this book is too "touchy-feely", but then birth is sort of touchy feely, isn't it?
